Government College Katsina principal receives death threats for releasing Buhari's result

GOVERNMENT College Katsina principal Mallam Isyaku Bello has started receiving death threats and has been summoned
by his employers for releasing General Muhammadu Buhari's West African School Certificate (Wasc) result.

Over recent week's General Buhari's certificate has been a discussion topic as elections loom because under the Independent National Electoral Commission's guidelines, all presidential aspirants have to submit their Wasc certificate or its equivalent. General Buhari had originally failed to attach his certificate to his form and the Nigerian Army said it did not have a copy in his file.

This led to weeks of wrangling over whether General Buhari was eligible to run for office until yesterday when his old school released his results. Having sat his Cambridge/West African School Certificate in 1961, General Buhari obtained five credits in English Language, Hausa, History, Geography and Health Sciences, while procuring a pass in English Literature and failures in Mathematics and Woodwork.

However, just 24 hours after releasing the result, Mallam Bello has been receiving death threats from unknown sources. In addition, he has been summoned by his employers, the Katsina State Ministry of Education, in connection with the release of the results.

Mallam Bello was said to have explained that he needed to defend the integrity of the college and he was not taking sides with General Buhari. Formerly known as Provincial Secondary School, Katsina, Government College has produced many eminent Nigerians over the years, including former chief of staff supreme headquarters Major General Shehu Yar'Adua.

One source said: “Some forces were unhappy with the issuance of results and they have been threatening the principal. They have been calling him names, abusing him, while some were actually threatening to deal with him.

“They told the principal that he ought to have left Buhari to his fate instead of releasing his results. Faced with pressure, the principal has reached out to friends and relatives on the threats and explained that he did so to protect the integrity of the college and not anybody’s."

It was unclear whether Mallam Bello had reported the threat to the police or not. Already the All Progressives Congress has condemned the threats, saying that the principal is really being harassed for carrying out his official assignments.
